In August of 1960, after graduation from Princeton High School, I enrolled at Concord College (University). During my four years of pursuing a degree in Music Education, I worked part time at G. C. Murphy Co., served as organist at Carr Memorial United Methodist Church, and did private piano instruction. In May of 1964, I graduated with a B.S. In Music Education and accepted a teaching position in Russell County, Virginia, as traveling Music instructor in grades K thru 7. In 1969, I married Roger Sword, a native of Russell County. He retired in 2008 ,after being employed as Director of the Cumberland Plateau Regional Waste Management Authority In June we celebrated our 41st wedding anniversary. In 1976, I began working on my graduate degree, and in 1977, received a Master of Education Degree from the University of Virginia. I continued teaching music until 1987. The following school year, I began teaching Kindergarten and held this position for 14 years, retiring in 2001 with 37 years of teaching. During my teaching years, I was honored by being selected for membership into The Delta Kappa gamma Society International and Who's Who Among America's teachers. Since retiring I have enjoyed every moment either working in my flower and vegetable gardens, scrapbooking, taking classes in computer and digital photography or doing nothing. I have also accepted the position of part time pianist at our church in Lebanon .My husband and I are the proud "parents" of a 4 legged, 9 year old miniature schnauzer named Max. He is our 4th schnauzer and does not know that he is a dog!!! My sister and I have maintained our Princeton homeplace after our parents passed away, It is not unusual for our families to be there 2-3 weekends a month especially during the summer. I have fond memories growing up there and so blessed to be able to come home often.

2018 update: (original posting below) Moved to a 55+ community in Fredericksburg, VA in 2014. Best move that Joan & I could have made. Marvelous neighbors, facilities, etc. A great mix of people -- population now about 1600 -- of varying backgrounds, interests, education, profession, ethnicities/cultures, geographic origins, levels of quirkiness and eccentricities. We're blessed to spend summers in Belfast, Maine [the Princeton, WV of New England with ocean as bonus]. Our 2 Black Labs, now deceased, have been replaced by a wonderful Black Lab-much-mixed mongrel [lab/coon hound/cocker spaniel/Australian shepherd]. "Joey" is a delight. Life remains good. [2010] My good wife Joan will again accompany me to the reunion. We live in Bethesda, MD with our 2 black Labs. I still love music, movie, mirth & mule; dogs & doggerel; . . . and folks like you (plus, of course, rootie-toot-toots & rummy-tum-tums). Eager to reconnect with my venerable classmates -- each one a Golden Oldie. I often think that I was born at just the right time and plopped in a near-perfect place to germinate. Thank you, all of you, for enriching my life. |

Comment: I have been looking forward to our upcoming reunion . Over the years I have enjoyed watching my three children, Jonathan (40), Margot (38) and Shayna (34) become upstanding adults. Over the years I have been in several businesses from family furniture to my own sales company as well as travel. Now I have slowed down and am trying to enjoy life more. |
